According to a report by BCNRanking, which tracked camera sales in Japan from November 2018 to October 2019, Sony has taken the lead when it comes to full-frame camera sales. This data includes sales of both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.
The graph below shows some additional details on how Sony managed to take the throne. Their full-frame sales increased by 18.9%, while revenue increased by 17.3%. In comparison, Canon’s sales increased by 6.6%, while the revenue decreased by 7.2%. Nikon is doing even worse, with both their sales and revenue going down.
Sony may not have the number one spot in the world at the moment, but Canon should definitely watch their back. As for Nikon, a lot of outside analysts agree the reason for Nikon’s bad performance is because they entered the full-frame mirrorless camera race a bit too late. It will be interesting to see if Sony can continue increasing their sales like this in the coming years.
