The 35mm f/1.8 lens has been one of the most requested lenses for the Sony FE lineup, and now it’s finally here. It perfectly feels the gap between the high-end Zeiss Distagon FE 35mm F1.4 ZA and the tiny Zeiss 35mm F2.8.
The new lens is made out of metal and plastic, and resembles some older Sony lenses like the FE 28mm f/2 and FE 85mm f/1.8. It has 11 elements in nine groups, with one aspherical element. The lens is also dust and moisture resistant, although not on the same level as Sony’s premium G Master lenses.
At 280 grams or close to 10 oz, this is truly one of the lightest lenses of its type. The focusing is smooth and fast thanks to a linear focus motor. It close focuses down to 22cm or about 9 inches, which means you can take some interesting close-up shots with it as well, making it even more versatile. The FE 35mm F1.8 will retail for approximately $750 and is going to start shipping in August 2019.
