Sony has just announced a new lens in its G Master lineup – the 12-24mm f/2.8 GM. At this moment, this is the widest f/2.8 full-frame zoom lens with constant aperture.
The new lens features excellent build quality that you’d expect from a G Master lens. It’s dust and moisture resistant. The lens has four XD linear motors resulting in fast and silent autofocus. Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 GM has 9 aperture blades, minimum focus distance of 28 cm (across the zoom range) and features a rear filter holder due to a big and bulbous front element.
The lens is actually surprisingly compact for what it is, coming in at 1.9lbs or 874 grams. It’s just slightly larger than Sigma’s 14-24mm f/2.8 Art lens, yet it has two extra mm on the wide end. Of course, all of this comes with a price. Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 GM lens will retail for $2,999 and is slated to arrive in August.
