As of the time of writing this article, the A6400 is the newest camera in Sony’s APS-C lineup. These cameras are not only great for photos, but they offer some great video features as well – like sharp 4K video, amazing autofocus and slow-motion video in 1080p. That being said, if you’re serious about video shooting, investing in a good external microphone is probably a good idea. After all, high-quality audio matters just as much as good video. Let’s take a look at some of the best mics for Sony A6400.

Best Microphone for Sony A6400
Below, we’ll cover five of our top choices when it comes to mics for A6400, sorted by price from most to least expensive. The first two mics will give you the best quality and features, but they are pricey and due to their weight may not be the best choice for the compact A6400. If you want a small setup, we’d go with one of the last two microphones on the list.
Rode VideoMic Pro+
This is the latest and greatest microphone in Rode’s lineup. Its older cousin (VideoMic Pro), which we also have listed below offers basically the same audio quality, but it lacks numerous features found on this (+) model. For example, this mic has auto on/off function, buttons on the back that allow for easy control of the device and a built-in rechargeable battery. You may have heard that Rode’s VideoMic Pro microphones have somewhat pronounced low end and although some people are completely fine with this, others might prefer more balanced-sounding microphones like Deity’s V-Mic D3 Pro that we’ll talk about soon.

Deity V-Mic D3 Pro
The great thing about this microphone is that it doesn’t lack many features compared to the VideoMic Pro +, yet it’s $100 cheaper. It has a built-in rechargeable battery as well as a gain knob on the back of the mic. Like we mentioned above, this mic is definitely more balanced than Rode’s offering. All in all, we truly think that V-Mic D3 Pro offers quite a bit of value for its price.

Rode VideoMic Pro
The VideoMic Pro came to the market long before the + version, which is why it offers way fewer features compared to its younger brother. Sound-wise they are basically identical, but there’s no auto on/off feature or rechargeable battery, for example. Instead, this mic uses a single 9V battery for power.

Deity V-Mic D3
If we had to pick one microphone for Sony A6400 that we’d recommend for most casual users, this would be it. V-Mic D3 is very affordable for the quality it offers and weighs less than all three mics we previously mentioned. Of course, most features like the rechargeable battery or the gain knob are missing. However, we think you’ll struggle to find a better mic for the price.

Rode VideoMicro
If microphone size is your main priority, then Rode VideoMicro is the one to go with. Thanks to its size and weight it is a perfect companion for vloggers, for example. It is powered by the camera so it doesn’t require any batteries. It is also the cheapest microphone on our list, but the audio quality lacks behind other microphones on the list, which isn’t surprising.
