Despite some of its limitations, like the crop factor when recording 4K videos, the EOS R is still really great camera for video shooters. Great colors paired with excellent Dual Pixel autofocus, and a solid lineup of upcoming RF and existing EF lenses make it one of the popular choices among filmmakers. Many people use it for weddings, interviews, YouTube videos and much more. However, if you’re planning to do any serious video shooting with your Canon EOS R, we suggest investing in a good external microphone. Audio is one of the most important aspects of a video, so for any serious use case, the built-in microphone won’t cut it. Here are some of the best mics for Canon EOS R.

Best Microphone for Canon EOS R
Below, we’ll list four of our favorite mics for Canon R, sorted by price from most to least expensive. Since the EOS R is a pretty advanced camera, we suggest pairing it with one of the more expensive mics to get the optimal results.
Rode VideoMic Pro+
This is the newest microphone in Rode’s lineup and it packs many interesting features such as a built-in rechargeable battery, buttons on the back of the microphone for easy control and auto on/off function that is really useful (it’s not hard to forget to turn off your mic after you’ve done recording video). The older version of this mic (without the +) lacks almost all of the extra features, but the sound quality isn’t necessarily different. However, if you need the best features, this is the one to get. Keep in mind that Rode’s VideoMic Pro microphones have a bit more pronounced low end. Some people love it, while others prefer more balanced mics like Deity V-Mic D3 Pro. More on that microphone in the next paragraph.

Deity V-Mic D3 Pro
This mic hasn’t been on the market for a very long time, but it is an excellent microphone that is about $100 cheaper than Rode’s VideoMic Pro+. It also includes a rechargeable battery (and you can charge it via a USB-C port). The V-Mic D3 Pro also has a gain knob on the back that can be very useful. Like we said, the low end is less pronounced on this microphone and it has more balanced sound overall.

Rode VideoMic Pro
Like we previously mentioned, this microphone is basically identical to Rode VideoMic Pro+ when it comes to sound. However, it doesn’t have a rechargeable battery (it’s instead powered by a single 9V battery) and lacks many other neat features of its more expensive sibling. That being said, it’s $100 cheaper!

Deity V-Mic D3
Out of all microphones on this list, this is definitely the most compact option. On top of that, it is also the most affordable one. Sound quality wise, it is quite close to the V-Mic D3 Pro. Unsurprisingly, you get way fewer features with this microphone. There’s no rechargeable battery (it uses a single AAA battery) or the gain knob on the back. With that said, this microphone offers a lot of value for the price!

Overall, it’s hard to name the best mic for Canon EOS R. Any of these microphones will do a great job, but if you want optimal performance and the best features, we’d go with one of the first two microphones.
