If you’re looking for the best all-around zoom lens for Sony APS-C mirrorless cameras with E-mount (Sony A6600, A6500, A6400, A6300, A6100, A6000 etc.), you’re at the right spot. Here are our favorite choices:
Best Choice – Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G
This is one of the newest lenses for Sony APS-C E-mount cameras and it was one of the most anticipated lenses. The reason is simple – a lens such as this one can be used in pretty much any situation. It is a 24-82.5mm full-frame equivalent lens, meaning that you can use it for anything from landscapes, travel photography, street photography, and even portraits thanks to its relatively bright maximum aperture of f/2.8. The autofocus works very well and is silent, meaning that it’s a perfect lens for video shooters as well.
The lens doesn’t have optical image stabilization, but that’s understandable considering its small size (it weighs just 1.09 lb or 494 grams). The f/2.8 aperture definitely helps mitigate the lack of image stabilization, because it allows for shooting with slower shutter speeds. Of course, using it with cameras like A6600 or A6500 is the best option since they have IBIS (in-body image stabilization). There’s one thing we don’t love about this lens, however, and it’s the price. It’s simply too expensive in our opinion, but if you want a single lens that can do it all and it fits your budget, you won’t regret grabbing this 16-55mm lens.
Option #2 – Sony Zeiss Vario-Tessar E 16-70mm f/4 ZA OSS
While this lens is quite a bit cheaper than the 16-55mm f/2.8, we wouldn’t really call it affordable. However, it carries the Zeiss name and that always comes with a cost. The 16-70mm f/4 gives you slightly longer reach (it’s a 24-105mm equivalent lens) but at the cost of maximum aperture. With that said, unless you really need that f/2.8 aperture, you can save some money and grab this lens. It’s quite compact and weighs just 10.86 oz (308 grams). Unlike the 16-55mm f/2.8, it features optical image stabilization, making it a great choice for Sony cameras that don’t have IBIS. In our opinion, this is the perfect lens for frequent travelers who want a simple, single-lens setup.
